Pangea Revisited (Facebook AIR)
Pangea Revisited 2019 Photos on Paper, Shadowboxes, Insect Pins Dimensions Variable Permanent installation for Facebook Offices, Seattle, WA. A newly imagined mapping of the global ecosystem. This piece was installed in two iterations: this first installment featured shadowboxes clustered and arranged in relationship to the continent of origin. A handwritten key bordered each wall with corresponding identification pins. Fifty-six distinct species were identified, sourced from ecologists, books, and the IUCN Red List. Species were arranged geographically in relationship to a global map: Species originating in North America, South America, on the left wall, and Africa, Asia, Europe, and Australia on the right wall. Species with four or more continental origins were arranged in clusters centrally.

Species such as the Blue Mussel, a species found throughout the northern hemisphere and cultivated for food, are also at risk, despite their current success. Ambiguous Losses 2020 Photos on paper, black paint 5.5” x 6.5” other dimensions variable In the late 1970’s amphibians around the world began to die off for mysterious reasons, contributing to dramatic population declines and extinctions of various frog and salamander species. It wasn’t until 1993 that the culprit of these die offs was discovered: Chytridiomycosis, caused by a chytrid fungi, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis. It is thought to have been spread through American Bullfrogs, distributed globally for food, and African Clawed Frogs, which were used as early pregnancy tests. Both species have been globally distributed by humans, and show resistance to the fungus. It has been suggested that this fungus has been exacerbated by climate change, which has enabled more ideal conditions for the virus to thrive in, and certain pesticides, which weaken the immune response in frogs. The Golden Toad, last seen in 1989 and now considered extinct, is one of the species who’s rapid decline is thought to have been caused by the fungus.
